Tenders are invited for the construction of a wave protection wall on the Saddle Embankment and part way along the Subsidiary Embankment at Grahamstown Dam.
Grahamstown Dam is prescribed as a 'High A' Consequence Category dam. An analysis of wave action as a result of combined wind and flood events at Grahamstown Dam was undertaken and highlighted that the Saddle Embankment and part of the Subsidiary Embankment is susceptible to significant overtopping by waves during an extreme wind event. Although the risk of failure of the Saddle Embankment or Subsidiary Embankment is very low, the economic and social implications of losing such a critical water supply reservoir are unacceptable. It was therefore concluded that a structural solution in the form of a wave barrier is required to mitigate this current risk.
2. Scope of Work
This work involves the construction of a wave protection wall on the Saddle Embankment and part way along the Subsidiary Embankment at Grahamstown Dam in accordance with the Contract Drawings including:
- Construction of 360m of modified overlapping thrie beam barrier (Subsidiary Embankment)
- Construction of cycle safe fencing for thrie beam barrier
- Construction of 100m of 0.5m wide x 0.5m high rock filled gabion/mattress (Subsidiary/ Saddle Embankment)
- Construction of 770m of 1.0m wide x 1.0m high rock filled gabion/mattress (Saddle Embankment)
- Restoration of disturbed areas
3. Duration of Contract

After researching tender notification providers for the company I used to work for, we chose TenderLink because it provided the best value service. Over five years, not one tendering opportunity for that company was ever missed by TenderLink.
In my opinion, TenderLink is the premier e-Procurement tendering solution. With the TenderLink web-based system, people publish their tenders online and all bid responses download in a uniform format. This is real efficiency. There's no double or triple handling.
Being new to the Government tender procurement process, I found the workshop conducted by Sandy to be a beneficial tool in gaining some valuable information. I would recommend the workshop.
