Solutions utilised are largely dependent on the particular wastewater system and issue at hand. A variety of approaches is usually necessary as each issue of odour and/or corrosion requires technical evaluation before the best solution can be recommended and implemented.
The Waste Water Pump Stations (WWPSs) nominated below have historically been a source of odour complaints due to the very large upstream catchment, which includes a mixture of both residential, private pump to sewer and tradewaste/commercial wastewater flows. The significant flows and wastewater turbulence contribute to the odorous conditions at the WWPSs. Previous attempts to 'contain' odours have been made via the use of gas-tight hatch covers and carbon filters and soil bed filters.
Gas-Phase Odour & Corrosion Control has been determined as the preferred method to primarily mitigate odour impacts on surrounding residents and remove hydrogen sulphide (H2S) from the wet well to reduce wet well corrosion to the WWPS structure and components at Salamander bay 1 WWPS. There is significant Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) at Dora Creek 1 and Belmont 6 WWPS and it is believed due to space constraints that activated carbon filtering is the solution at these stations.
The Dora Creek 1 WWPS is a vacuum system and as such flows are not as consistent as the other sites.
