In 2009, the Canterbury Water Management Strategy (CWMS) was launched to provide a framework for a collaborative, community-led approach to environmentally-sustainable water management. The Strategy has targets that cover 10 broad areas, one being 'Recreation and Amenity Opportunities'. All targets have goals to be achieved by certain timeframes.
This Request for Proposal focuses on freshwater recreation and amenity opportunities. To progress CWMS goals, Environment Canterbury wants to understand what diversity of freshwater-based recreation and amenity values exist in Canterbury and what documentation is available to illustrate these values. Information and data about recreational uses in Canterbury has tended to be less well documented than for some other values, although there have been studies done for specific locations. Understanding what documentation exists will also help to identify where there are data gaps for high level recreational values.
This information will start to build a picture of the recreation and amenity opportunities in Canterbury that provide our community with social, cultural, health and economic benefits to the region.
Thinking about how people might want to access this data now and into the future will form part of a long-term work plan. This work plan will align with Environment Canterbury's data management programme that will ensure the accessibility, reliability, and timeliness of data for its users.
